Engineers and other sophisticated professions' holders must work within the frame of their jobs but the problem is that private companies better hire foreigners because of level of payment, it is much reasonable to hire an egyptian engineer and pay him 500 than pay 1000 for a kuwaiti, there must not be that much of a difference based on nationality_ and then do a whole committee to encourage kuwaitis to work in private sectors, then you don't find a job in any of those places you're persuaded to go to.

you're completely right there won't be a lack of variety in profession if the engineers didn't take hold of their professions.

I talk of Bannay or a builder because I'm an architect and I really wish for a kuwaiti builder who understands me and understands our culture.

but again the reason why I wanted the working class to be of Kuwaitis is that it would be "spatially" active. a programmer would work anywhere even at home, but the working class is in contact with homes, streets, gardens, food, daily supplies_basically tangible things that a person can live and responds to and acts upon and communicate with, working class are the people creating infrastructure, habits, language and terms, songs, stories, values of everyday life and difference in perspectives. and they are the ones who give definition for status.

the humble najjar whome you're shy of can be the best in town. believe me Kuwaitis are very willing to accept new lifestyles.Deemahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08308596665343265262noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4639704682246572633.post-17936939576348351202010-02-19T11:07:36.717+03:002010-02-19T11:07:36.717+03:00قرمت

It's very ha...Great post but I beg to differ.

It's very hard to achieve when you have small population and plenty of wealth.

These are lower-paid jobs. What everyone would make from a government job would top that. Let alone the perceptions in society. Najjar? O met'amel jayna tabi ebnayatna? Get a degree.

They rather buy a degree from egypt, bahrain, etc, than learn to become something that would end up being a disgrace.

On the other side, we have an economy that needs restructuring, we can't live off oil forever. Given our small population, we can't live off making goods and exporting them. But we can build a highly-paid information society. Jobs like programming and engineering are the only key to sustainable growth.

Large countries start with industries, then they move to information as they develop. Japan and US are two examples.

We can afford to make this move. We need great schools and labs, lots of labs. We need a dynamic private sector that understands what's at sake. Kuwaiti companies outsource the high-paying jobs through offices in London and NY, and their alternative is to import professionals from India and Lebanon to do all the highly-paid jobs.

Our engineers seldom engineer, instead, they're supervisors. Our programmers have turned PC technicians. They fix computers, a job an 18yrold can take, instead of writing programs and designing systems.
